Wellness is not a solo project: Why your community matters more than your willpower
Aug 14, 2025
You’ve likely been told that getting healthy is all about you.
Your motivation. Your habits. Your discipline.
But let’s be real. You don’t live in a vacuum.
You live in a social ecosystem—and that ecosystem has a powerful (and often invisible) influence on your choices.
It’s not just about willpower. It’s about who and what you’re surrounded by.
Whether you’re the kind of person who thrives in crowds or needs quiet to recharge, one thing remains true: we are tribal creatures. We mirror, absorb, and adapt to our social environment—often without noticing.
If you’ve ever:
Stayed up too late because your roommate was binge-watching
Ordered dessert because everyone else at the table did
Doubted your goals because an influencer swears by a totally different approach
…you’ve experienced this firsthand.
So what can we do about it?
We start by noticing the influence. And then we design for it.
Use your community intentionally.
Find your people
Whether it’s a walking group, a local class, or even a few online connections—you need people who are moving in the same direction.
It’s easier to stick with a new habit when others are modeling it, too.
Follow the right cues
Surround yourself with people who are just a few steps ahead of you.
See what they’re doing, what they’ve learned, and let their momentum rub off.
Ask for support
Let the people in your life know what you’re working on.
Tell them what helps—and what doesn’t.
Many people will gladly support you if you ask. And if they don’t, that tells you something important, too.
Protect your progress.
Supportive community is ideal. But sometimes, you need boundaries too.
If a social group repeatedly derails your efforts—even unintentionally—it’s okay to step away for a bit.
That might mean:
Skipping a dinner that’s all about indulgence
Curating your feed to remove unhelpful messages
Saying no to that friend who always mocks your efforts
It’s not rejection. It’s respect—for the version of yourself you’re working toward.
You don’t have to do this alone. In fact, you shouldn’t.
Wellness isn’t a solo mission.
It’s a co-created space. A shared journey. A daily dance with the world around you.
So build your tribe. Ask for support. Set boundaries. Be brave about protecting your peace.
You deserve a community that lifts you up—and yes, you can build one.
